CERN's edge AI data analysis techniques used to detect marine plastic pollution |
CERN’s expertise in data management is leveraged to combat marine plastic litter through the new EU project, Edge SpAIce. The aim is to develop a specially designed on-board system for satellites that will make it possible to acquire and process high-resolution pictures using a Deep Neural Network through the “edge AI” approach, in which data is processed in near real-time directly on the satellite. |

CERN at the Geneva Health Forum |
On 27-29 May, CERN took part in the Geneva Health Forum and presented the Global Health Workshop "Tackling global health challenges with deep tech” which will take place in October. With contributions from Médecins Sans Frontières, HUG - Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève, Terre des Hommes, Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, and EATRIS, this workshop will be an exceptional opportunity to bring together a diverse community of professionals, ranging from policy makers to technical experts spanning various disciplines to delve into some of the most pressing global health challenges. CERN’s role will be to act as a broker to enable interaction between the multiple stakeholders with the aim of maximising the impact of technology on society. CERN is fundraising in the first instance, to cover travel expenses for participants from Low- and Middle-Income countries to ensure that those most concerned have their say when designing solutions for global health. Later additional funding will be needed for the implementation of the successful projects. Please contact CERN's Knowledge Transfer group if you wish to help in this mission. |

Promoting cutting-edge cancer research with ions at PTCOG |
In June, the industrial relations team (CERN, GSI, INFN) had a booth at the Annual PTCOG (Particle Therapy Cooperative Group) Conference in Singapore to promote HITRIplus, a multidisciplinary collaborative EU-funded project aiming to integrate an advance biophysics and medical research in cancer treatment with heavy ions. The project's disruptive technologies could take ion therapy treatments to the next level as it would make particle therapy machines much more lightweight, compact and cost effective. |
